Treatments for children & Adults

Orthodontic Treatments Explained

Orthodontic treatments exist to correct dental irregularities like crowding, spacing, crossbites and asymmetries between the upper and lower jaws. Children and adults of all ages with a healthy dental history are qualified candidates for orthodontic care.

What type of treatment does my child need?

Orthodontic care is provided in one or two separate phases of treatment. Commonly known as phase I and phase II (Comprehensive) treatment. If phase I treatment is indicated, a phase II treatment will likely be required as well.

Phase I

Not all children require phase I treatment. However, when applicable, phase I therapy is usually limited to 12 months or less of total treatment time and focuses to correct severe irregularities such as: guided tooth eruption, severe misalignment of the teeth, severe bite irregularities, impacted teeth, asymmetric jaw alignment, palatal expansion, and space maintenance.

Phase II / Comprehensive Treatment

Most orthodontic needs can be addressed with one treatment course, otherwise known as comprehensive treatment. While it varies when someone is ready for comprehensive care, most treatment is indicated no sooner than 11-13 years old, or when all of the primary teeth have been lost. This form of treatment typically lasts between 18-24 months and can be offered with traditional braces or clear aligners (commonly known as Invisalign).

Comprehensive Treatment for Adults

The American Association of Orthodontists estimates more than 25% of active orthodontic patients are over the age of 18. Options for braces have become much more esthetically pleasing providing a less bulky feeling. In addition, clear aligners are a wonderful option for the busy, working adult.
