Types of Braces

Clear braces are an alternative to typical metal braces. They are designed to be less conspicuous and to blend in with the natural color of teeth. The brackets are made of either ceramic or plastic material, and use clear elastic ties and white metal.

Ceramic braces blend into the color of your teeth making them less conspicuous than traditional metal braces. The rubber bands used to hold the wire to the brackets is typically clear or white. The brackets do not stain and the bands to not typically stain.

Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth and are made of metal. Because they are behind the teeth, no one can tell you have them unless they are looking inside your mouth. They are more expensive than traditional braces and can make it difficult to speak at first.

Self-ligating braces are also referred to as “speed braces.” The brackets don’t need the rubber bands or the metal tie wires.

The most common types of braces used are the traditional metal braces. They are made out of stainless steel and nickel titanium. The wires are bent to the desired shape and are laced through the brackets and move the teeth.
